Western Lake Erie Fishing Report

Western Lake Erie Walleye's Are Hungry Despite the Weather!

A 13 year old boy holding Fish Ohio walleye caught on the Sir Walleye Charters boat with a Purple Demon color spoon in April of 2026.

This week's current Western Lake Erie fishing report the walleye bite can not get much better!  Weather has been all over the board with high winds, rain and rivers pumping mud into the Lake. Skies have been mostly sunny, winds in the 10 to 15 mph range all around the compass, drizzly mornings, 2 to 4ft seas,  and rapid changing barometer.

Trolling has been the dominant method of fishing for the Sir Walleye Boat. Tommy Harris custom painted crankbaits with Mustad Alpha Point ITG 76 treble hooks in size number 2 have been the predominant lures.  The New Mustad Hooks are amazing in the hook up rate due to the Alpha Point technology. These hooks are sharp, let me tell you! The ITG 76 offers a shorter shank hook with ultra sharp longer points and a triple grip design. I have been testing these new hooks since the beginning March 2026 and have not lost a fish off them yet! Back to the main fishing report program; I have been fishing between 20 and 23 ft of water looking for the light stain water color that holds active walleyes. I have been running lures down in the water column between 13 and 18 feet down depending on the marks on the Hummingbird fish finder. Predominantly I have been using 70 and 80 ft leads putting the crankbaits on the board lines at approximately 16 to 18 ft down. Dipsy divers and 50 jets have come into play more and more with small walleye size spoons. I use all Dreamweaver dipsy divers size #4 (107mm) black in color. These are the same size a Lure Jensons #1’s with the ring still on.  Dipsy leads have been 35 and 40 ft of line out on a #3 settings. For those of you that might not know, Dipsys have different settings to make them dive different angles away from the boat. A number 3 setting makes the diver go further away from the boat and a 0 setting almost straight down next to the boat. Different settings allow you to run multiple dipsy’s per side of the boat. Tru Trip 50 jet leads have been 30 and 35 ft of line out. The jets dive straight down next to the boat. I use these methods to allow me to get to the legal limit of 3 lines per person and keep them out of the way of all the other board lines.  Speed has been what most would call too fast for April on Lake Erie at 2.5-2.7 SOG. That is summer time speed or Salmon fishing speed some would say.  One fellow Captain called me and asked me to “Help him out” and share my location and program only to call me a complete liar! LOL Those of you reading this that know me can vouch that I may be a lot of things but I am not a liar! Catch rates have been amazing in my opinion, clients have been obtaining their legal limit of 6 walleyes per angler in just a few short hours. Fishing has been so good that I am getting most of my limit reeled in while breaking the trolling set up down. I have been cleaning my personal catch for the day and donating them to the elderly and folks that are unable to fish any longer.  Giving away my personal catch of Lake Erie walleyes is just one of the many ways that I love to give back to the community.

PRO Tips:

  1. When the fish are not biting as you think they should SPEED UP when trolling.
  2. Always trust your electronics, Fish where you are most confident in the marks on the graph.
  3. Trolling more rods cuts your catch rate down per rod and gets you in front of more active fish on statics alone.
