5/19/26 Lake Erie Fishing Report

Lake Erie Walleye fishing is as good as it can be right now! Seas have been in the 2 to 3 ft average, some days much less. Winds have been favorable from the south, with a couple from the northeast. I welcome a day or two here and there with a northerly direction to keep the water stained close to shore. Air temperature has been in the mid-60's with a few days in the 70's, making for very comfortable conditions out on the lake! However, the bromoter has been all over the place, with pressure rising and falling, making the walleye drop to the bottom of the water column. Lake Erie walleyes have still been hungry even at the bottom of the lake.

I have been slowly transitioning from crankbaits to jets and spoons. I run a stern paliner straight out the back of the boat with a jet and spoon, and it has been very productive. If you follow Sir Walleye Charters on our social media channels, you might have seen that Jimmy caught a 28.5-inch fish, an Ohio walleye, off the stern palainer rod with a spoon! I have been hard-pressed to give up my Tommy Harris painted crankbaits. I like them so much, but it's time to make the switch to the Silver Streak spoons! I received a care package in the mail from my Old friend Tommy with several new Silver Streak JR Streak spoons. What I like so much about Jr Streaks is the paint! Let me tell you that paint holds up very well! I fish more than a hobby angler for sure, and I always want a quality product on my boat and on the end of my fishing line.
I set the Old School 40 jets up with a 7 ft mono leader and a Jr Streak spoon on the end. I have been fishing these at 2 to 3 ft above the bottom of the lake, depending on where I see the most marks on the graph. Speed at the lure on the Fish Hawk has been 2.7 to 3.0 mph. Flat out hauling the mail to make the trolling rods bend over with a fish on them. My top-producing color patterns have been Crome Lake Erie Flu, Antifreeze Chicken wing, and Piston Cup. The most consistent water-depth-holding walleye right now seems to be in the 21 to 24-foot range. My goal every day is to find out which direction the current is flowing and either fish with or against it. Remember, current is not always with the waves! My clients have been catching their limit of walleyes in just a few short hours, giving them the rest of the day to hang out, sightsee, play golf, or make the journey back home.
Mustad Pro Tips:
- Look for the current in the lake with your electronics. If you do not have them, read your rod tips to see how hard your lures are pulling. Troll directly into the current and with the current for more hook-ups!
- Always use quality lures and hooks! Even if they cost more up front, the investment always pays off in the long run!
- Never count out fish hanging on the bottom. They will bite too! Sometimes!!!
